Society is more accepting of divorce, and seen as an ‘easier route’ than previously. This may mean individuals seek divorce sooner, and may not work at the marriage for as long.
How has stigma impacted trends of divorce?
There is less stigma attached to getting divorce. Previously there was a lot of shame attached, but this was no longer the case.
How has secularisation impacted trends of divorce?
Churches are more supportive o remarriage and divorce. Also, even where churches are less supportive, religion plays less of an influence on peoples lives.
How has changes in women positions impacted trends of divorce?
Women are able to support themselves financially so less likely to stay in a loveless marriage for the sake of this.
-the demands of modern living, especially women working, puts more pressure on couples. The pressure can damage the relationship.
-women experience feeling valued at work, and don get the same applause at home. Leading them feeling unhappy in their marriage.
What is a feminist?
A group who believe there should be more equality between genders.
How has legal access impacted trends of divorce?
Since changes in 1969, it is easier for both parties to have access to divorce, and there are more legal reasons to support divorce. This includes the addition of no fault divorce.
What impact will divorce have on family life?
-less loveless marriages.
-children may send more time with one parent following divorce.
