types of experiments Flashcards
what are the 4 types of experiments?
field
lab
quasi
natural
what is a lab experiment?
takes place in a controlled environment, researcher manipulates the iv and recods the effect on the dv
what is a strenght of lab experiments?
high control over confounding and extraneous variables, causual relationship clear. high replication
what is a limitation of lab experiments?
lacks generalisability, artificial situation that doesnt replicate real life, ppts dont care as much so may showdemand characteristics. low external validity
what is a field experiment?
More natural setting, less control of EVs.
what is a strength of field ex?
higher mundane realism, replicates real life so lower chance of demand characteristics. high external validity
what is a limitation of field ex?
no control of extraneous and confounding variables, hard to establish cause and effect, low replicability.
ethical issues, cant consent
what is a natural ex?
The IV changes without the experimenter’s intervention, researcher just records the effects on the DV. No random allocation.
what is a strength of natural ex?
provide opportunities to research topics unable to research before eg. romanian orphan studies
high external validity, real issues
what is a limitation of natural ex?
events studies happen rarely and are unpredictable, reduce opportunities of research, no random alllocation
what is a quasi experiment?
IV is based on an existing difference between participants. No random allocation.
what is a strength of a quasi ex?
carried out in controlled conditions
what is a limitation of a quasi ex?
no random allocation so may be confounding variables as all ppts go through same condition without other similarities.
