sampling Flashcards
what is a sample
the ppts selected from a target population to make generalisations.
what are the 5 types of sampling methods?
(VORSS)
volunteer
opportunity
random
systematic
stratified
what is a volunteer sample?
Participants ‘self-select’.
what is an oportunity sample?
Opportunity sample Whoever is available at the time of sampling will be included.
what is a random sample?
Every member of the target population has an equal chance of being selected.
what is a systematic sample?
Every nth person is chosen from a list.
what is a stratified sample?
Stratified sample The proportions of people in population subgroups (strata) are reflected in the sample.
ao3 volunteer s?
s- less time consuming and easy, more engaged ppt
n- attracts certain audience that cant be generalised to others.
ao3 opportunity s?
s- convenient, less costly
n- open to researcher bias, has selection over ppts and cant be generalised
ao3 random s?
s - unbiased
n- time consuming, large audience and may be unrepresentative.
ao3 systematic s?
s- objective, scientific credibility, no influence
n- time consuming, refusal to take part.
ao3 stratified s?
s- representative of population, reflects composition of population
n- innacurate, cant identify all factors that differ within groups.
