experimental design Flashcards
what are the 3 tyoes of experimantal design?
Independent
Repeated measures
Matched pairs
what is independent groups design?
Two separate groups are involved, each group does one of the conditions of the experiment.
what are repeated measures?
All participants take part in all conditions of the experiment.
what is matched pairs?
Participants are matched on some variable that is important to the experiment and then one of each pair is allocated to a different condition.
what is an issue with IGD?
ppts who occupy different groups are not the same in terms of ppt variables. confounding variables.
how is this issue fixed?
random allocation
what is random allocation?
An attempt to evenly distribute participant differences across experimental conditions in an independent group design
what is an issue of repeated measures?
order affects as each ppt has to go through each condition, may remeber order or show demand characteristics
how is this issue fixed?
counterbalancing
what is counterbalancing?
An attempt to control for order effects in a repeated measures design: half the participants do the conditions in one order and the other half in the opposite order.
