types of experiment Flashcards
lab experiment
experiment that takes place in a highly controlled environment
researcher manipulates the IV and records the effect on the DV
strength of lab experiment
high control over extraneous and confounding variables (high internal validity)
replication is more achievable
limitation of lab experiment
may lack generalisability due to being more artificial which means the study may lack realism
demand characteristics are more likely
field experiment
experiment that takes place in a natural setting
researcher manipulates the IV and records the effect on the DV
strength of field experiment
higher mundane realism because pps may produce behaviour that is more valid and authentic
limitation of field experiment
loss of control over EVs and CVs so precise replication is less possible
ethical issues - pps may not be able to consent if they’re unaware that they’re being studied
natural experiment
experiment where the change in the IV is not brought about by the researcher
researcher still records the effect on the DV
strength of natural experiment
often have high external validity because they involve the study of real-world issues
limitation of natural experiment
reduced opportunity for research bc naturally occuring events may only happen rarely
quasi experiment
consists of an IV that is based on an already existing difference and the IV cannot be changed
strength of quasi experiment
often carried out under controlled conditions and therefore is available for replication
limitation of quasi experiment
cannot randomly allocate pps so there may be confounding variables
