Types of Experiment. Flashcards
What is a laboratory experiment?
A highly controlled environment where the researcher deliberately manipulates the IV to investigate the effect on the DV.
What environment does a laboratory experiment take place in?
In an artificial environment; participants are aware they are in an environment.
What is a field experiment?
Conducted in a natural environment, the IV is directly manipulated by the researcher who measures the DV.
What are the participants in a field experiment? What is good/bad about this?
Unaware they are participating in an experiment. Good- behavior is more natural. Bad- makes it difficult to control extraneous or confounding variables.
What is a natural experiment?
Where the IV is not directly manipulated by the researcher. Instead, the researcher takes advantage of a naturally occurring independent variable.
In a natural experiment, why cant the IV be directly manipulated?
For practical or ethical reasons.
What does a Quasi experiment mean?
‘Almost an experiment’
What is the IV in a quasi experiment?
A difference between people or things that exist.
Why can the researcher not allocate conditions for participants in a quasi experiment?
The IV is a feature of the participants.
