Medicines
Legal drug that help the body fight injury, illness, or disease.
OTC
A medicine sold legally in pharmacies and other stores without a doctors prescription.
Prescription
A drug that can be obtained only with a written order from a doctor and can be purchased only at a pharmacy.
Illegal
A chemical substance that people of any age may not lawfully manufacture, possess, buy, or sell.
Proper Use
Using per label instruction to treat an injury, illness, or disease.
Misuse
Mistakenly taking more than is recommended to treat an injury, illness, or disease.
Abuse
Deliberately taking more than is recommended or taking for purpose other than treating an injury, illness, or disease.
Side Effects
An unwanted physical or mental effect cause by the drug.
Tolerance & Dependence
When drug is used repeatedly, the body develops tolerance to it, to where the user needs more for the original effect.
Withdrawal
If user becomes dependent and stops taking the drugs, they will experience negative side effects.
Dopamine
A neurotransmitter that helps control the brains reward and pleasure centers.
Under Normal Condition
Chemical Dopamine travels between brain cells, producing pleasurable sensations.
On Drugs
Cells release extra dopamine, causing a stronger signal.
After Repeated Drug Use
Brain cells lose receptors for dopamine, becoming less able to process the chemical. the pleasure signals weaken.
Psychoactive Drug
Chemical that affects brain activity
Antagonism
Occurs when each drugs effect is canceled out or reduced by the other
Synergism
Occurs when drugs interact to produce greater effects than those that each drug would produce alone.
Protective Factors?
Family, Social and Personal.
Depressants
A psychoactive drug that slows brain and body reactions.
Stimulants
A drug that speeds up activities of the C.N.S
Hallucinogens
A drug that distorts, perception, thought, and mood.
Marijuana
The leaves, stems, and flowering tops of the hemp plant Cannabis Sativa (can act as a Depressant Stimulant and Hallucinogen.)
Club Drugs
Differ in classification (named from popularity at clubs/raves.)
Inhalants
A breathable chemical vapor that produces mind altering effects.
Steroids
Synthetic drugs similar to the hormone testosterone.
