Types of Degeneration Flashcards
Calcium infiltration into normal tissue. E.g. Hypervitaminosis D.
Calcification, metastatic
Calcium infiltration into abnormal/damaged tissue.
E.g. atherosclerosis or atheroma. Damage to tunica intima.
Calcification, dystrophic
Tuberculosis
Caseous
Albuminous. Membrane injured which effects ionic transfer.
Cloudy Swelling
Infarction (MI)
Coagulation
Pancreas
Enzymatic
Liver, aka “nutmeg liver”. In Heart = “Tabby cat heart”. Fatty dot • Fatty streak •
Atheroma (fatty plaque) • fibroatheroma (fibrous tissue, calcium)
Fatty
CNS (e.g. Brain melts, tertiary syphilis, leprosy) or Skin (if from infection)
Liquefaction
Peripheral nerves. Degenerates to the next Node of Ranvier. “Diving back Phenomenon”
Wallerian
Hvaline. Most common in skeletal muscle. Muscle replaced with hyaline.
Zenker’s (Waxy)
Nuclear rupture
Karyolysis
Nuclear swelling
Karyorrhexis
Nuclear Condensation
Pyknosis
