types of data and sampling Flashcards
example of quantative data?
time
what is judgement sampling?
use your judgement to select a sample that is representative of your population
what is systematic sampling?
choose a starting point from the sampling frame at random and then choose items at regular intervals eg every 5th person in a list
what is cluster sampling?
used when the data naturally splits into groups eg geographical areas
what is the sample and the sampling frame in cluster sampling?
sample-some clusters
sampling frame-list of clusters
what is an example of qualitative data?
colour
what is qualitative data?
categorical data-anything that isnt a number eg, football teams, countries etc
what is an outlier/anomalous data?
a value that doesnt fit the pattern of the data
what is an example of primary data?
a tally you make of car types
what does cleaning data mean?
identifying and correcting or removing inaccurate data values or extreme values
what is quota sampling?
group the population by characteristics such as age, gender etc
-then interview a quota (number) from each group
what is extraneous data?
variables that youre not interested in but could affect the results of the experiment
what is discrete data?
can only take certain exact numerical values eg number of children
what is bivariate data?
involves pairs of related data
what is multivariate data?
data that involves sets of 3 or more related data values
what is ordinal data?
data that can be written in order or can be given a numerical rating scale
an example of continuous data?
height
an example of secondary data?
information from a website
what is categorical data?
data that can be sorted into non-overlapping categories
example of discrete data?
number of aunts
what is quantitative data?
numerical data- 2 types of quantitative data-continuous and discrete
what is continuous data?
can take any numerical value eg height, weight
what is secondary data?
data that has already been collected by someone else
what is primary data?
data that you collect first hand
what is opportunity sampling?
use the people (or objects) that are available at the time
