A
data obtained first hand by the researcher for the purposes of the research project
usually gathered first hand e.g. questionnaire

- authentic data obtained directly from the participant therefore targeted to get the information that is required

- it can require a lot of time and effort in conducting the experiment etc

A
information that pre-dates the research project and has already been gathered by someone else

- may be inexpensive and easily accessible requiring minimal effort

- there may be variation in the quality and accuracy of secondary data
- the content of the data may not quite match the researchers’ needs
