levels of measurement Flashcards
1
Q
nominal
A
data represented in the form of categories
e.g. number of students that drive, walk, bike etc
discrete - one time can only appear in one category
2
Q
ordinal
A
data which is ordered in some way
e.g. rating the 6th form on a scale of 1-10
does not have equal intervals between each unit
lacks precision - based on subjective opinion
can be referred to as ‘unsafe’ - turned into ranks then statistical test is done
3
Q
interval/ratio
A
based on numerical scales that include units of equal precisely defined size
units of measurements for height, time, temp etc
can be discrete or continuous
4
Q
discrete
A
- units of measurement cannot be split up
- exact measurements only
- shoe size, rolls of dice etc
5
Q
continuous
A
- measured using a scale of measurement
- height, distance etc
