types of conformity and explanations for conformity Flashcards
what is conformity?
a type of social influence
what is the definition of conformity?
yielding to group pressures
who proposed 3 types of conformity?
Kelman
what are the 3 types of conformity?
- internalisation
- identification
- compliance
what is internalisation?
Making the beliefs, values, attitude and behaviour of the group your own
what is the strongest form of conformity?
internalisation
why does internalisation often occurr?
as a result of informational social influence
is the change of view in internalisation permanent?
yes
what is identification?
Temporary/short term change of behaviour and beliefs only in the presence of a group
what is compliance?
This means to follow other people’s ideas/to go along with the group to gain their approval or avoid disapproval. You publicly agree but privately disagree
is compliance permanent?
no
When does compliance often occurr?
as a result of normative social influence
what is informational social influence?
When someone conforms because they want to be right,
so they look to others by copying or obeying them, to have the right answer in a situation
what does ISI usually lead to?
internalisation
when does ISI usually occurr?
in situations where we do not have the knowledge or
expertise to make our own decisions
what is normative social influence?
when someone conforms because they want to be liked and be part of a group
when does NSI usually occurr?
when a person wants to avoid the embarrassing situation
of disagreeing with the majority.
research support for NSI
evidence supports it as an explanation for conformity
Asch interviewed ppts some said they confirmed because they were self conscious and afraid of disapproval
when pots wrote their answers conformity = 12.5%
research support ISI
Lucas et al found ppts conformed more often to incorrect answers they were given when math problems were difficult
when problems were hard situation became ambiguous
unclear wether NSI or ISI at work in research studies
Asch found conformity is reduced when there is one dissenter
dissenter may reduce powers of NSI or ISI
hard to separate NSI and ISI
both probably operate together in real-world conformity situations
individual differences in NSI
doesn’t predict conformity in every case
some people more concerned with being liked than others - naffiliators
Mcghee and Teevan found surfers who were naffiliators = more likely to conform
