research support for consistency
Moscovici et al - green/ blue slide study showed consistent minority opinion had a greater effect on changing views of others.
Wood et al - meta-analysis of almost 100 similar studies finding minorities who were seen as consistent were most influential
research support for deeper processing
Martin et al - message supporting a viewpoint and measured ppts agreement. one group of ppts heard a minority group agree with the intial view while another group heard majority agree.
ppts were then exposed to a conflicting view and attitudes were measured again.
people were less willing to change their opinion if they heard majority
Martin et als research make clear distinctions between minority and majority
real-world social influence situations are much more complicated.
e.g. majorities normally have more power and status
artificial tasks
including Moscivi et als green/ blue slide study
research removed from how minorities attempt to change behaviour of majorities in real life
lack external validity
