Types Of Conformity Flashcards
Internalisation
Private as well as public change in opinion
Identification
We identify with the group and want to fit in so we change our opinions publically, but not always privately
Compliance
Going along with others but not believing when private. We don’t change our opinions. The opinion will stop when group pressure stops
ISI
Informational social influence
We agree with the majority because we believe it is correct
NSI
Normative social influence
We agree with the opinion of the majority because we want to gain social approval and be liked
- the elevator study where everyone stood the wrong way so stranger copied. This is an example of NSI
Conformity definition
A change in a persons behaviour or opinion as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people
Evaluation
Research support for ISI
- Lucas et al asked students maths questions varying in difficulty
- there was greater conformity to incorrect answers when the questions were more difficult
- shows people conform in situations when they don’t know the answer
Evaluation
