Minority Influence Flashcards
Minority influence
Where one person or small group influences the beliefs of other people
-often leads to internalisation
Moscovici et al
- investigated minority influence
- 6 people asked to view 36 blue coloured slides varying in intensity and then state whether the slides were blue or green
- each group had 2 confederates who consistently said on 2/3rds of the trials the slide was green
Moscovici et al findings
- the participants gave the same wrong answer on 8.4% of the trials
- 32% gave the same answer as the minority on at least one trial
- a second group had an inconsistent minority and agreement fell to 1.25%
- a third control group with no confederates and only wrong answers on 0.25% of trials
Consistency
Consistency in minority groups increases interest from others
-makes people rethink their views
Commitment to the cause
- e.g engaging in extreme activities that may be dangerous to show how committed you are
- the majority will then pay more attention
Flexibility
Been consistently repetitive can be off putting to the majority
-need to consider other points of views and accept valid counter arguments
The process of change
The three factors (flexibility, commitment and consistency) lead to deeper processing and more people switch from majority to minority view
