a study searching for a correlational link between to variables. There is no cause and effect and no IV or DV. The variables are identified and measured, and often times not all the variables are controlled.

focuses on real world situations and the subjective/narrative view of the subject. It is non-generalizable beyond the subject group and it mostly consists of interviews, case studies and observations
