Sampling Techniques Flashcards
Sampling
The process of selecting subjects for study. A two-step process: identify the ‘target population’ and select the technique
Sampling technique
Random, opportunity/convenience, stratified/quota, cluster, purposive and snowball
Random sampling
everyone in the population has an equal chance of being selected
Opportunity/convenience sampling
identifies different types of people within the target population available at the time and willing
Stratified/quota sampling
identifies types of people within the target population and works out the proportions needed
Cluster sampling
collecting subjects from the same place instead of the whole of the population
Purposive sampling
collecting subjects who will benefit from the findings of the experiment
Snowball sampling
when the research subjects recruit more subjects for an experiment
