Compact bone
a solid and hard bone that makes up the outer layer of all bones and the shafts of long bone
spongy bone
a porous bone, makes blood cells and stores fat
Flat bone
consist of a layer of spongy bone between two thin layers of compact bone
long bone
consists of a shaft and two ends and is longer than is is wide. It consists of a thick outside layer with a bone marrow filled cavity. Then end of the bone is spongy bone (think femur)
irregular bone
consists of thin layers of spongy bone surrounded by compact bone and does not fit any of the previous bone descriptions
short bone
roughly a cube shape with vertical and horizontal dimensions being approximately equal. They consist mostly of mostly spongy bone. The outside surface is a thin layer of compact bone
