Coronal plane
divides the body vertically into anterior and posterior positions
sagittal plane
divides the body vertically into unequal right and left portions
transverse plane
divides the body horizontally into superior and inferior portions
median plane
divides the body vertically into equal left and right portions
cranial cavity
the inside surface of the base of the skull, providing a stable platform for the brain
dorsal cavity
at the posterior, or back, of the body, including both the head and the back of the trunk
pelvic cavity
housing space for the urinary bladder, the pelvic colon, internal reproductive organs, and rectum
ventral body cavity
the anterior, or front, of the trunk. This includes the lungs, heart, stomach, intestines, and reproductive organs
thoracic cavity
a space inside your thorax (chest) that contains your heart, lungs, and other organs and tissues
vertebral cavity
an anatomical space formed by the vertebral column that stores an integral portion of the central nervous system
abdominal cavity
the cavity within the abdomen, the space between the abdominal wall and the spine
abdomino-pelvic cavity
a body cavity that consists of the abdominal cavity and the pelvic cavity
