Types of bone cells Flashcards
what are osteoblasts
BLASTS= BUILD
these are bone building cells which lay down calcium, matrix and fibres
WHERE ARE OSTEOBLASTS LOCATED
at bone surfaces
ossification sites
at sites of fractures
in the metaphysis (regions of long bone where ossiffication occures)
what is the function of the osteoblatst
they make collagen to form bone matrixs and they control the calcification and mineralisation of bones
what is the bone matrix
bone matrix consists of collagen fibres
they have a high inorganic salt content which make them hard
these inorganic salts are deposited between these collagen fibres
what are osteoclasts
these are large cells with several nuclei
they work to break down the bone by absorption for remodelling
their ruffled border releases acid and enzymes which deigest the mineral and protein contents of the bone
ythey are found in the periosteum and endosteum
what are osteocytes
these are mature bone cells formed when osteoblasts are no longer producing collagen
they are surrounded by bone matrixs produced by osteoblasts
they are responsible for nutrients and waste
