parts of long bone Flashcards
what is the diaphysis
this is the shaft of the long bone with ecloses the medullary cavity
what is the epiphysis
this is the ends of long bone formed out of cancellous bone covered in a thin layer of compact bone
it articulates other bones to form joints and it is covered in a layer of cartilage to absorb shock and reduce friction
what is the distal and proximal epiphysis
the proximal epiphysis is the end of the bone closest to the body and the distal epiphysis is the end of the bone which is furthest away from the body
what is the epiphysal plate
this separates the diaphysis and the epiphysis
it is a layer of cartilage which is where the diaphysis lengthens during bone growth
thisn is also where bone growth in childrern begins
what is the endosteum/medullary cavity
the central cavity of a long bone which is com posed of blood cells and tissue
what is the periosteum
a sheath of connective tissue covering the bone surface
it contains osteoblasts to help the bone grow in diameter and not length
what is articular cartilage
it covers the epiphysis and is made of cartilager which reduces friction and absorbs shock
