Types of bonding / structure of 1st 20 elements Flashcards
What is electronegativity?
The measure of attraction a nucleus has for shared electrons.
Why do the boiling points of the halogens increase going down group 7.
. Strength of the intermolecular forces is greater.
. Because the number of electrons increases therefore LDFs are stronger.
. Therefore LDFs take more energy to break.
What is the first ionisation energy?
The energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of atoms in the gas state.
How does hydrogen bonding occur?
When hydrogen bonds with either Nitrogen, oxygen or fluorine.
What is the structure of sulfur?
S⁸
What is the structure of phosphorus?
P⁴
What are the three structures of carbon?
Covalent network (diamond)
Covalent network (graphite)
Covalent molecular (buckminsterfullerine)
What is the molecular formula of buckminsterfullerene?
C60
