Fertiliser Flashcards
What are the essential elements for healthy plant growth
Nitrogen
Phosphorus
Potassium
What is the Haber process?
Making ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen
What is the Ostwald process?
Oxidising ammonia to make nitric acid.
What is the purpose of fertilisers?
To make plants grow faster and bigger so that crop yields are increased.
What is the catalyst used in the Haber process?
Iron
What is the temperature of the Haber process?
Not too low or too high of a temperature. If too low the reaction too slow. If too high the ammonia will die(decompose).
What are some key features of the Haber process?
High pressure - increases yield of ammonia.
Condenser cools reaction to turn ammonia into a liquid so it is easier to extract.
Un-reacted nitrogen and hydrogen are recycled.
What are some key features of the Ostwald process?
Moderately high temperature
Exothermic reaction
How are most fertilisers made?
They are the salt formed during neutralisation reactions if the necessary elements are present.
