Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
What is the functional group of a carboxylic acid?
Carboxyl group (-COOH)
What reaction takes place between a carboxylic acid and a base?
Neutralisation reaction
What is produced from a neutralisation reaction?
Salt, water, and sometimes carbon dioxide
How do you name the salt produced from a reaction between a carboxylic acid and a base?
1st part of the name is the metal from the base.
2nd part of the name comes from the non-metal present in the acid.
How are esters produced?
Esters are made from a reaction between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid.
What are the products of the complete combustion of a hydrocarbon?
Carbon dioxide and water
How are carboxylic acids made?
By oxidising an alcohol
What are esters used for?
Flavourings, fragrances, and solvents for non-polar compounds
What reactions form and break esters?
Condensation forms esters
Hydrolysis breaks esters
Describe a hydrolysis reaction?
An ester is reacted with water to break the molecule back into the original alcohol and carboxylic acid.
What is the reducing agent in the oxidation of Butan-1-ol, Butan-2-ol, or butanal?
Acidified potassium dichromate
What is the colour change when a primary or secondary alcohol is oxidised by acidified potassium dichromate?
Orange —> green
What is the colour change when an aldehyde is oxidised by Tollen’s solution?
Colourless —> silver
What is the colour change when an aldehyde is oxidised by Fehling’s solution?
Blue —> orange
