Types Of Bonding Flashcards
What is a bond?
An attractive force holding particles together
What is an ionic bond?
The electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
What is a covalent bond?
A shared pair of electrons, the electron pair is attracted by both nuclei, so resists separation.
What is a coordinate bond?
A covalent bond where both electrons in the shared pair originate from the same atom.
Why is the bonding in Aluminium Chloride odd?
It contains a metal and a non-metal, but is covalent
Al only has 6 electrons in its outer shell (electron deficient)
What is metallic bonding?
The attraction between positive metal ions and the surrounding delocalised electrons.
Why are there delocalised electrons in metallic bonding?
As the outer electron is only weakly held, so becomes delocalised (free to move through the structure)
