Electronic Structure Flashcards
What is the max number of electrons in each energy level?
1- 2
2- 8
3- 18
4- 32
What are the 4 types if orbitals?
s, p, d and f
What is an orbital?
A volume of space around a nucleus where there is a high probability of finding an electron.
Is the 4s orbital at a higher or lower energy level than the 3d orbital?
Lower, hence why the 4th period in the periodic table starts before the 3rd energy level is full. This means 4s fills before 3d but as it is still the outer energy level, it empties first.
What are the rules followed when an orbital is filled?
Electrons always fill the available orbital of the lowest energy
Each orbital can hold max 2 electrons
Atomic orbitals of the same energy will fill singly with electrons of the same spin before pairing of electrons occurs.
