Types Of Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
Binary Fission
Who? Single Celled Organisms
What? The cell divides into two daughter cells to produce two clones of the parent cell.
Budding
Who? Hydra, Yeast, and Coral
What? The parent produces a small bud, or miniaturized clone. Sometimes stays attached, sometimes detaches.
Parthenogenesis
Who? Social Insects - ants and bees
What? Unfertilized, haploid eggs mature into new organisms.
Spores
Who? Fungi, moulds, green algae
What? Haploid cells that can develop into new organisms. NOT sex cells. One organism produces many spores.
Vegetative Reproduction
Who? Most plants - strawberries, spider plants
What? The asexual production of identical offspring or clones from the parent plant. It does not involve the formation of a seed.
Fragmentation
Who? Worms, Starfish
What? New individuals are formed from a piece of the existing parent organism.
Grafting
Who? Flowers and Fruit Trees.
What? A part of one plant is joined with another plant called the parent tree. The two heal together and grow as a single plant.
Plant Tissue Culture
Who? Plant cells
What? Cells are placed in a Petri dish with nutrients then grow into new individuals. Used to clone plants.
