Alternative Energy Flashcards
Hydroelectrical Energy
Generated by harnessing the energy of flowing water. The water goes through a generating station and spins a turbine to create electricity.
Fossil Fuels
Produced from the organic matter of organisms that lived millions of years ago. They are non-renewable. They are burned to create power.
Biomass
A renewable resource. Made up of plant and animal waste. The waste decomposes and turns into methane which can then be burned to produce power.
Nuclear Energy
Atoms of a heavy element split during “nuclear fission”. This releases TONS of heat energy. This is used to heat water and create steam to turn a turbine. Sometimes renewable.
Geothermal Energy
Water is heated by molten rock in the earths core. It then rises to the surface as hot water and steam. Hot enough to heat homes/buildings.
Solar Energy
Sunlight is captured in solar panels. This energy is then used to heat homes and buildings, and power calculators, watering systems, etc.
Wind Energy
Wind turbines use the energy of moving air, to spin their blades which are connected to a generator. Faster wind = more power.
Tidal Energy
Harnesses the energy of the tides to generate electrical energy. The rising and falling tides make turbines spin in a generator which then produce energy.
