Types of aid Flashcards
What are the four types of aid?
- Emergency/humanitarian aid
- Bilateral aid
- Multilateral aid
- NGO aid (non government organisation)
Explain emergency/humanitarian aid
Is an immediate response to cater for short term needs during times of conflict or natural disasters
- Does not address causes of poverty
- provided by government and non government organisations
What does emergency/humanitarian aid do?
Provides medicine, food, shelter and/ or personnel to areas experiencing disaster
Explain bilateral aid
- Is given from one countries government to another
- Is usually the largest part of aid a country receives
- Is often for political or strategic reasons
- The donor country often gets something in return for the bilateral aid
Give an example of bilateral aid
- Building a bridge but using Australian workers and materials
- It is physical environment sustainable as future generations can use it
- Not socially sustainable because locals do not learn skills to build the bridge
- Not economically sustainable as local companies who produce goods do not benefit.
Explain multilateral aid
Multilateral aid is provided when developed countries give money to organisations who, in turn, fund programs to promote health in developing countries.
This type of aid:
- Is more likely to reach those most in need
- Is often long term
- Aims to reduce poverty
- Can fund programs which promote sustainable human development
Give 2 examples of multilateral aid
- United Nations Development Program
- United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF)
Multilateral aid in Paupa New Guinea. An Australian aid project is helping revive the cocoa and copra industries.
