Types and Parts of Bone Tissue Flashcards
What is cartilage?
resilient, semirigid, connective tissue
What is the perichondrium?
the fibrous connective tissue around cartilage
What is the periosteum?
fibrous connective tissue covering the bonesWh
pain sensitive membrane
What are the two types of bones?
compact and spongy
compact bone is made osteons runing the entire length of the diaphysis
-good with standing forms
-hold muscles
-has haversian system (includes haversian canals that run parallel to bone & volkmann’s channels - perpendicular to haverisian system)
-lamellae (rings)
Spongy done
- found in the epiphyses of compact bone
- more at the joint
- withsand all forces including compression
What is the articular cartilage?
cartilage at the epiphysis
What is the nutrient artery?
it feeds the bone, essential for bone growth - it enters and exits from the nutrient foremen
What is the endosteum?
located between cavity & compact bone
What is the medullary cavity?
it holds the bone marrow
