Classification of Bones & Cartilage Flashcards
What are the 6 categories of bones?
long, short, flat, irregular, accessory-supranumerary, heterotopic
What is a long bone?
it is tubular
length is greater than width
What is a short bone?
cuboidal
length = width = height
only in tarsus (ankle) and carpus (wrist)
What is a flat bone?
protective (cranium, sternum, scapulae, ribs)
flat, thin, slightly curved
ideal for hematopoesis
What are irregular bones?
any bone that doesn’t fit the other five categories. ex. spinal column
What are accessory-supranumerary bones?
the formation of “extra” bones - it occues when ossification centers failed to fuse together
What are heterotopic bones?
bones that were not meant to be formed there
happens when there is multiple traumas to muscles and bone develops within
What are the three types of cartilage?
hyaline, fiberous, elastic
What is hyaline cartilage like?
- chondroblast & white collagen fibers
- respiratory tract, joint movement, bone growth
- on joint surface
What is fibrous cartilage like?
for support and proection
-found on bone joint, knee and backbone
What is elastic cartilage?
for flexibility and support
outer ear, epiglottis, larynx
