Types and methods of practice Flashcards
describe variable practice
a skill practised in many environments. The practice conditions must be as realistic as possible
for example throwing or catching with another player
describe whole-part-whole practice
when the performer learns the skill in its entirety the practises the skill in its subroutines ad then puts the skill back together to practice in its entirety
for example a basketball lay up shot
describe whole practice
skill is taught without breaking it down into subroutines or parts
for example a golf swing
describe massed practice
learner practises a skill continuously without any rest or break intervals and practice sessions can be really long. so can be used when a coach wants to stimulate performance conditions where there is an element of fatigue
for example a tennis serve
describe progressive- part practice
it is when a serial skill is broken down into sub-routines. the performer learns one link at a time until the links can be practised together
for example breaststroke swimming
describe part practice
used when a skill is low in organisation and can be split into sub-routines. As you learn each subroutine individually
for example a tennis serve
describe distribute practice
practice session have rest intervals to allow time to recover both mentally and physically
for example sailing you will learn 2 hours and then take a rest and then return to sailing
describe fixed practice
a specific movement pattern is practised repeatedly in the same, stable environment
for example passing and catching against a wall
