Types and Methods of Pracitce Flashcards
What are the 4 types of practice?
massed, distributed, fixed and varied
What is massed practice and what types of skills does it work well for?
no proper breaks and the skill is practised over and over again. It is good for discrete simple skills with a clear beginning and end
Which type of practice is split up by breaks?
Distributed = sections of practice split by breaks allowing mental and physical rest
What is varied pracitce?
practice of skills in a constantly changing environment where drills become progressively harder
Which skills suit fixed practice and why?
self paced, closed and simple as they are easily repeatable again and again.
What are the 4 methods of practice?
part, whole, whole-part-whole and progressive-part
Which method involves chaining?
progressive-part
What are the pros and cons of whole-part-whole practice?
pros - weak parts can be isolated and improved, kinaesthesis happens, fluency is maintained between subroutines
cons- it takes ages, ineffective with highly organised skills
What are the cons of part practice?
time consuming, cannot be done with highly organised skills, no fluency, no kinaesthesis, loss of motivation as they never do whole skill
What are the cons of whole practice?
difficult for cognitive learners, causes fatigue, must be physically capable
What are the pros and cons of massed practice?
pros : fitness can improved, fatigue in game scenario can be stimulated
cons : causes fatigue so performer may not physically be able to do it, no time for feedback
What are the pros and cons of distributed practice?
pros : cognitive performers can recover and receive feedback in rests, unfit performers will benefit from rest, mental practice can be done in rests
cons : time consuming, lengthy rests can result in disruption if there is a large group
What are the pros and cons of fixed practice?
pros : good for motivated individuals, overlearns/grooves skill so it becomes habitual, time efficient
cons : monotonous, loss of motivation, fatigue, harder to transfer to a game scenario
What are the pros and cons of varied practice?
pros : cognitive learners gradually gain understanding due to progression, range of drills so motivation stays high, enables positive transfer
cons : time consuming method, info overload, negative transfer
