memory models Flashcards
What are the 3 stages of remembering information?
encoding, storage and retrieval
What are the 3 memory stores?
short-term sensory, shot-term and long-term
What is chunking?
different pieces of info are grouped together and then remembered as one piece of information
How long is info stored in short-term sensory and how does it pass on to short-term?
1 second
Selective attention filters relevant info into the short-term memory
How much info is stored in short-term memory and for how long?
limited info for 30 secs
How does info move into long term memory?
rehearsal of important info means it’s encoded into the long-term store
What is Craik and Lockhart’s levels of processing model?
the model explains how memory works and opposes the view that there are set memory stores. If info is considered deeply then the memory of it is likely to last a longer time.
According to Craik and Lockhart, how do we remember info for longer?
If it’s considered, understood and has meaning to us. Also the deeper the info is processed, the longer the memory lasts.
Pros and Cons of multi store memory model?
Pros = simplifies memory process, explains how those with brain damage may have dysfunctional memory showing difference between short and long term
Cons = doesn’t explain why we remember different types of info,
Pros and Cons of Craik and Lockharts level of processing approach?
Pros = explains why info that is understood is more likely to be remembered and the longer we consider info the more it’s remembered
Cons = longer processing doesn’t always lead to better recall, doesn’t take into account individual differences
