Guidance and Feedback Flashcards
What are the 4 types of guidance?
verbal, visual, mechanical and manual
What are the pros and cons of verbal guidance?
Pros = can be used at all stages of learning, delivered to multiple people at the same time, other methods can be used alongside, motivates performer
Cons = coach must have required skills, difficult when skill is complex, boring
What is manual guidance and give an example?
The coach physically helps the performer through the skill - e.g. a gymnast learning a handstand, the coach can hold their feet up right to assist with movement
What are the cons of visual guidance?
demonstration could be incorrect so pointless, unclear demonstration, the skill could be quickly performed so it’s unclear for viewers on what they are meant to pick up on
What is mechanical guidance?
the use of equipment to help a learner perform/learn a skill
What are the 6 types of feedback?
intrinsic, extrinsic, positive, negative, knowledge of results and knowledge of performance
Why is intrinsic feedback good?
feedback is readily available, no reliance on others, autonomous learner will have very accurate intrinsic feedback
What are some cons of positive feedback?
if undeserved the performer will develop incorrect S-R bonds, some performers don’t respond to too much praise and will ignore any feedback
What is knowledge of results?
external feedback about the outcome of the skill performed.
What is knowledge of performance?
either external or internal feedback about the pattern of movements that has taken place.
What makes feedback effective?
specific information, immediately after performance, related to the individual and encouraging the performer to use intrinsic feedback
