Type 2 Respiratory Failure Flashcards
what is type 2 respiratory failure
hypoxic hypercapneia
PaO2 < 8 kPa; PaCO2 > 6 kPa
causes of type 2 respiratory failure
This is due to alveolar hypoventilation. This means that the lungs fail to effectively oxygenate and excrete the carbon dioxide being produced
what conditions may cause type 2 respiratory failure
Obstructive lung diseases – Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Restrictive lung diseases - idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Depression of the respiratory center – opiates
Neuromuscular disease – Guillan-Barre syndrome, motor neuron disease
Thoracic wall disease – rib fracture
treatment of type 2 respiratory failure
non- invasive ventilation (NIV), sometimes referred to as bi-level positive airways pressure (BiPAP), to help the body get rid of the carbon dioxide.
type 1 or 2 respiratory failure management
type 1- oxygen
type 2- CPAP or BiPAP mechanical ventilation
