what is type 2 diabetes
A
non-insulin dependant diabetes
ie beta cells make insulin but the uptake/ utilisation doesn’t work properly or cell receptors are defective

A
adults
obese
strong family history
black African, African Caribbean, south asian

how does type 2 diabetes present
A
weakness polyphasic (hunger) glycosuria polyuria polydipsia

how do you investigate type 2 diabetes
A
random blood glucose (11.1 mmol/L)
Fasting plasma glucose (7mmol/L)
2 hour glucose tolerance (11mmol/L)
HbA1C (48mmol/mol= 6.5%)

how do you manage type 2 diabetes
A
low fat diet
metformin
if can’t take metformin take DPP-4 inhibitors (gliptins) or pioglitazone or sulphonylurea (gliclazide)
keep measuring HbA1c levels every 3-6 months
