Type 1 diabetes references Flashcards
Prevalence
8% prevalence in the UK - Whicher 2020
Definition
Damaged beta cells fail to produce insulin in which cannot regulate blood glucose levels, also known as dysglycaemia
Complictions
Hypers and DKA, hypos and serve hypo episodes, and neural implications
Symptoms
- Excessive thirst
- Rapid weight loss
- Fruity breath
MORE
Medication
Exogenous insulin
Complications of exercise and type 1
Exercise activates release and/or production at the onset of physical activity as glucose is used by the body as a fuel source, therefore the required insulin can change
Benefits of exercise
- Decreased HbA1c and more time in range - Umpierre 2013
- Improved insulin sensitivity and reduction in exogenous insulin - Codella 2017
- Reduced inflammation and improved immune system
- Well being - Mikklesen 2017
Fluctuations in glucose
Aerobic has greater fluctuations compared to resistance exercise - Yardley 2012
Resistance? Reliable?
1-2 sets significantly increases glucose post-exercise, but 3 sets does not - Turner 2015 - this info is good to critique methodology
Order
Usually resistance before aerobic, but highly dependent on baseline glucose levels. This reduces the need of glucose supplementation and decreases risk of nocturnal hypoglycaemia - Yardley 2012
Time of day
Morning as reduced number of hypo events and benefits metabolism the following day - Gomez 2015
