Rheumatoid arthritis references Flashcards
Prevalence
1% of the UK population, with majority of diagnoses in females
Definition
Autoimmune disease that results in pain, stiffness and swelling of the joints - Lee 2001
Causes
Aetiology is unknown and therefore is no cure, therefore disease management is vital
Complications
- Reduced mobility and functional ability - Lee 2001
- Increased risk of CVD, the most common form of mortality in RA - Kitas 2011
- Fatigue and depression - Treharne 2007
ACSM guidelines
70% of people with RA do not meet ACSM guidelines - Sokka 2008
Prescription
Currently medication including anti-TNF treatment is provided and are available for those with severe symptoms - reduces inflammation, disease activity …
Exercise
Those who are not on medication can gain similar benefits through exercise, plus more (Veldhuijzen 2019)
Benefits of exercise
- Reduced fatigue (2003)
- Improved endothelial function and CR fitness reduces risk of CVD - Stravopolous 2013
- Improved mental wellbeing - Meikkelsen 2017
SDT
Yu et al 2015 found SDT based interventions to be effective at increasing PA in RA -
But Velhuijzen 2021 found it to be effective, but did not improvee CR fitness
Exercise and fatigue
Rongen van Dartel 2023 - one of the first studios to measure fatigue as a primary outcome. Results showed that fatigue was significantly decreased with 12 weeks, but not 24 weeks
Studies to compare
Stravopolous 2013
Veldhuijzen 2019 - medication
Veldhuijzen 2021 - sdt and participation
Kurachski 2019 - fatigue
Kucharski 2019
primary outcome of fatigue
- 20 week HIIT programme with 12 month follow up
- decreased fatigue
- improved CR fitness
- decreased depression
- decreased disease activity
- however not maintained after 12 months
- not assessment of behavioural intervention
