TYK Work Equipment Flashcards
Can you list factors that affect suitability of work equipment?
Suitable for intended use
Suitable for work conditions
Maintained
Inspected
Lifting equipment must also have adequate strength and stability marked with its SWL and be positioned and installed to minimise risks.
What is the difference between lifting equipment and accessories for lifting?
Lifting equipment is used for lifting and lowering loads (including anchors).
Accessories for lifting means lifting equipment for attaching loads to machinery for lifting
Equipment should be subject to ongoing examination
When should maintenance, thorough examinations and checks be made on lifting equipment?
- Before first use (unless it has an EC declaration of conformity within last 12 months or LOLER certification is provided)
- After installation that could have affected its safety
- if used for lifting people every 6 months
- other lifting equipment every 12 months
OR
- In accordance with a schedule drawn up by a competent person
- After exception circumstances that could affect safety
Do you have detailed product knowledge about the equipment you regularly use at work?
Yes be aware of local house policies and licence requirements.
Be aware of how using work equipment affects its minimum breaking load, factor of safety, working load limit and safe working load.
For example dogs can limit SWR to 80% of its SWL even when installed correctly.
Choking a gackflex could reduce its SWL by 20%
Can you describe the relevant considerations when specifying the means of terminating a SWR?
Use the highest efficiency termination where possible
Can the SWR be terminated by the manufacturer with a specified SWL?
Is the item reusable?
Is it being used in line with manufacturer guidelines
What are the key requirements of PUWER?
- Suitable and safe
- Inspected
- Training & Instruction
- Controls and Safety measures
- Maintainance & Logs
- Enforcement
Removal of faulty equipment and ensuring it cannot make its way back into service.
What are the key requirements of LOLER?
- Planning & Supervision
- Equipment requirements eg
- Maintenance & Inspection
- Marking
- Positioning
- Thorough Examinations
- Inspections
What are some key aspects of supervision?
Maintenance, inspections and checks are valuable aspects of safe working systems. For instance ensuring defective equipment is removed and and marked as faulty.
Adequate supervision means time pressures and other constraints are not interfering with safe practices.
