Tx Spine Flashcards
What is the function of the TX Spine?
Protect organs
Connect body parts
Assist respiratory system
What is rib distortion?
Rotation is limited due to the rib cage
When a person rotates to the left the posterior aespect of the rib of the left becomes convex and then the anterior aespect of the left rib becomes flat.Ant. aespect of right rib becomes more concave
What happens when a person ages?
Costal cartilage ossifies and rib distortion becomes less
How does the weight and force of affect the TX Spine?
Line of gravity falls more anterior
Compression forces increase due to kyphotic shape
Compression forces increase due to weight of body that needs support
What is a facet joint?
Joints that are located at the top and body of each vertebra.Which connect the vertebra to each other and allow ROM
What is the Rules of 3 when Palpating?
T1-3-The transverse process is the same level as the spinous process
T1-3 is the same as T12
T4-6 The spinous process is half a level down each transverse process
T4-T6 is same as T11
T7-T9 The spinous process is 1 level below the transverse process
Same as T10
What are the causes of TX Pain?
Trauma
Degenerative conditions
Postural thoracic pain
Thoracic outlet syndrome
Referred
What is Thoracic outlet?
Anterior Scalene Anteriorly
Middle Scalene Posterior
1st Rib inferiorly
What could cause Thoracic Outlet syndrome?
Hypertrophy and shortening of scalenes
Whiplash or Rib fractures
Weaknesses of mid Thoracic stabilizers
What are the Clinical features of TOS?
Neck pain
Skin is blotchy and discolored
Altered sensation in the arm
Weakness and heavy feeling in the arm
How can you treat TOS?
Mobilization of Ribs and TX Spine
Scapula stabilizers
DNF strengthening
