“The train this slow evening goes down England browsing for the right sky”
The word “slow” suggests how much time it’s taking. Here she’s looking outside and reflecting on the idea of getting older. Just as when you leave school and try to find where to go so too is she trying to find a new home. The word choice of “browsing” suggests she’s ok about this as it’s in rushed and has a leisurely feeling to it. This tells us she’s looking for what she wants and doesn’t have pressure on her
“For miles I have been saying What like is it”
The repetition of “what like is it” tells us how her mums voice is still in her head reinforcing their close bond
“The way I say things when I think”
This is her internal voice which emphasises the close bond between mum and daughter. The person pronoun of “I” suggests that importance of her mother to her
“Nothing is silent. Nothing is not silent”
When we hear “nothing” it’s “silent” but it also isn’t as the voices in our head are still going. The paradox serves to emphasise their close bond and how she can’t escape her mums voice because she doesn’t want to
