“All childhood is an emigration”
An image. The word choice of “emigration” is a life changing event and everything is completely different representing “childhood.” This is because you are going from one stage to another and you’ll never go back.
“Some are slow leaving you standing, resigned up ana venue where no know you know stays”
The repetition of the sibilance “s” creates a soft whispering sound to echo the idea of changes being slow and gradual
“Other are sudden”
The short sentence emphasises how some changes are quick and also the shock that comes with it. Some people feel vulnerable as they are unexpected
“Your accent wrong”
The short sentence emphasises the change in the way she speaks. The word choice of “wrong” has connotations of judgement suggesting because of the way she speaks she feels as though she doesn’t belong and feels awkward
“Corners, which seem familiar leading to unimagined pebble-dashed estates”
We associate “corners” with being enclosed and trapped. This suggests her vulnerability. The phrase “Unimagined pebble dashed estates” suggesting the houses are foreign and they seem strange
“Big boys”
The plosive repetition of the “b” sound created a harsh sound emphasising that she’s intimidated by them
“Shouting words you don’t understand”
The word “shouting” suggests there’s anger and threat. The phrase “words you don’t understand” conveys that she feels awkward and really vulnerable
“My parents anxiety stirred like a loose tooth”
The image emphasises it’s annoying and always there. It also constantly bothers you and you want it gone. Same wag that her parents always worry about her and it’s in the back of their head.
“I want our own county”
Italics. The words “our” and “own” emphasise that a sense of belonging is need and she is yearning for a national identity as it was taken away from her and now she’s lost
