Q

describe identical twins

A

-monozygotic (MZ) twins.
-they come from one fertilised egg.
-they have identical genes as there is one sperm, egg and product of fertilisation.
-the DNA is 100% the same and always same sex.

Q

describe the characteristics within identical twins

A

-if a characteristic is genetic, then MZ twins should both show that characteristic.
-no characteristic connected with behaviour is shared completely by MZ twins- there is always some influence from the environment.

Q

describe non-identical twins

A

-dizygotic (DZ) twins.
-they come from two fertilised eggs.
-since they develop from different eggs, DNA of DZ twins is only as similar as siblings, it is not 100% the same.

Q

describe the characteristics of non-identical twins

A

-if a characteristic is genetic, DZ twins would be expected to share that characteristic to an extent.
-when both twins share a characteristic it is known as a concordance rate (to what extend do both twins carry a characteristic)

Q

what were the 3 aims of brendgen et al?

A

-to see if social aggression could be caused by genes or the environment.
-to see if one type of aggression leads to another type.
-to see if social aggression shared the same cause as physical aggression.

Q

how many pairs of twins had complete data at all stages of the study?
why?

A

-234 (MZ twins male=44 female=50) (DZ twins male=41 female=32 mixed=67)
-parents may have taken them out

Q

how was the data gathered?

A

longitudinally at 5,18,30,48 and 60 months then again at 6 years.
data consisted of two ratings:
-teacher (on a 3-point scale)
-classmates

Q

what are two strengths for correlations in twins?

A

-high in validity
-both MZ and DZ twins share thier environment so there is a natural control over environmental effects.
-this means we can be sure any differences in concordance rates are unlikely to be due to environmental effects

-it is useful as MZ twins share 100% of their DNA showing there is no other way to study genetic influences so clearly

Q

when was the ratings gathered?

A

in the spring term of the school year to ensure twins were well known by those providing the ratings of their behaviour.

Q

how were the teachers ratings and measures?

A

Teachers questionnaires asked them to rate each child on a 3-point scale on the 6 statements 1-sometimes 2-often 0-never
-tries to make others dislike a child
-says bad things/spreads nasty rumours about another child.
-becomes friends with another child for revenge
-gets into fights
-physically attacks others.
-hits, bites or kicks others.

Q

what were the childrens tasks

A

They were shown photos of their classmates and asked to circle photos of 3 children who best fit these 4 descriptions:
-tells others not to play with a child (social aggression)
-gets into fights (physical aggression)
-tells mean secrets about another child
-hits, bites or kicks others.

Q

what type of score was each twin given?

A

a physical and social aggression score from teachers ratings.

any peer selections on social or physical descriptions that were made of each twin were also recorded.

15
Q

what were the results for aim 1?

A

in both teacher and peer ratings for twins there were higher correlation between ratings of MZ twins of physical aggression than between same sex DZ twins.

strong positive correlation for MZ twins on physical aggression scores for social aggression were roughly equally correlated in MZ and DZ twin pairs.

16
Q

what were the results for aim 2?

A

a correlation was found between physical and social aggression in the children that was best explained by genes rather than the fact that the twins shared the same environment.

could be the result of aggressive tendencies in general being the result of genetic factors or environmental factors.

17
Q

what were the results for aim 3?

A

data suggested that physical aggression may lead to social aggression, but not the other way round.

they concluded that perhaps the expression of aggressive tendencies change as children grow as they may learn more ‘socially acceptable’ ways to show aggression.

18
Q

What are two weaknesses for correlations in twins?

A

-Lacking in validity-MZ twins are likely to be treated more alike than DZ twins. This might mean that MZ have a greater environmental similarity in comparison to DZ twins.
-Lacks reliability-individual changes due to epigenetic modification to occur. It is difficult to say a characteristic is due to genes just because MZ twins share it and DZ twins do not.

19
Q

What is the generalisability for this study?

A

Good-234 pairs of twins is a large quantity of twins (also was a mix of MZ,DZ same sex/mixed set) so will represent more twins.

Bad-only from Quebec in Canada and were only born between nov 1995 and July 1998 so doesn’t represent twins elsewhere or different data of birth ranges.

20
Q

How is the reliability of the case study?

A

Good-they used standardised (same for everyone) questionnaires for the teachers and the class peers. Twins made sure that the order of questions/types of questions didn’t influence their judgement of physical and social aggression.

21
Q

Where could this study be applied?

A

There could be developments in strategies to reduce/prevent social aggression in MZ twins. This could be by teaching MZ twins coping strategies for aggressive outbursts.

22
Q

How valid is this study?

A

It’s very valid as they asked key questions in spring term as the peers and teachers would be more familiar with each other increasing the accuracy of physical and social aggression.

May be poor as they might give inaccurate judgements of social aggression due to arguments that could’ve occurred that day.

23
Q

Are the ethics good or bad and why?

A

Bad, as the children were asked to circle peers faces for social and physical aggression, this could lead to targeted bullying.

Also good, parents have given consent for their children to take part (assent)
