Tutorial 9 : Global status of Genetically modified crops Flashcards
genetically modified crops
plants used in agriculture, the DNA pf which has been modified using genetic engineering methods
transgenic
introduction of genes from different species
cisgenic
using gene from the same/closely related species
intragenesis
insertion of recombinant gentic info which is composed of a combination of different sequences from different genes from the same organism
herbicide-tolerant transgenic crops
potential solution which can facilitate flexible use of robust non-selective and broad spectrum herbicides
insect-resistant transgenic crops
crops have been transformed with insecticidal genes (most harmful different variants of cry gene, and in a few events VIP gene) which control the harmful insects attacking crops
abiotic stress tolerance
plethora of environmental factors referred to as abiotic stresses, such as drought, heat, cold, flooding, salinity,… exert a negative impact on growth and development of crop plants, leading to reduction in grain yield.
to cope up with abiotic stresses, plants alter their metabolism in many ways and this mechanisms are used in GM plants
disease resistance
diseases caused by pathogens, such as nematodes, fungi, bacteria and viruses, cause extensive loss in the crop yield.
it is thus important to develop inherent disease resistance in crop plants.
this requires understanding the genes responsible for disease resistance and transferring the same to plants through breeding or biotechnological approaches
nutritional improvement
plant nutrient contents can either be increased by focussing on: vitamins, fatty acids content, and essential amino acids content,…
genome editing
mutation of specific genes that we want to modify
