plant production practices Flashcards
plowing
a metal blade that goes through the
soil and it turns it burring the top
layer and leaving free the bottom one
tilling
vertical tilling and minimal tilling. It
breaks up and looses the soil surface
to prepare for planting.
discing
done after plowing or tilling, it ussually works at medium depth and the main objective is to smothen the soil and break clods that may be left after plowing
evaporative cooling
disadvantage:
- high humidity levels
- reduced effectiveness in humid climates
- water consumption
- maintenance requirement
- temperature control limitation
shading
disadvantage:
- light reduction
- ventilation issues
- maintenance and costs
- complexity in management
- temperature management
hybrid ventilation system
hot air from outside is cooled down
system of cooling the water down from a geothermal well in the ground
desiccant cooling system
the outside hot air goes through a desiccant wheel and cooled down by a heat exchanger
and through a cooling pad before entering the greenhouse
fertigation
combining fertilization with irrigation to apply soluble nutrients via the irrigation system
Rockwool
greenhouse substrate
Excellent water retention and aeration; does not degrade, ideal for hydroponics
perlite
greenhouse substrate
Lightweight, volcanic glass that improves drainage and aeration; used in soil mixes to enhance root growth
