Tutorial 8 - Article 2 - Stereotype content model across cultures Flashcards
What is the stereotype content model?
A model that proposes potentially universal principles of societal stereotypes and their relation to social structure
What is the aim of this paper?
Examining the similarities and differences in stereotype content across cultures
What are the primary dimensions of stereotype content?
1) Warmth (friendly, good-natured, sincere, and warm)
2) Competence (capable, competent, confident and skillful)
How do perceived warmth and competence impact stereotypes across cultures?
They reliabily differentiate societal group stereotypes across cultures
How do people rate out-groups?
High on one dimension, low on the other (ambivalent)
How does status relate to the dimensions?
High status groups stereotypically are competent, whereas competitive groups stereotypically lack warmth
How do collectivistic cultures relate to the dimensions?
In collectivistic cultures, people do not locate reference groups (in-groups) in the most positive cluster (high-competence/high-warmth)
