Tutorial 6 - Definitive Jaw Registration Flashcards
If you are making an acrylic denture you will carry out this stage using?
- wax or acrylic base plate + occlusal wax rims
- base plate is wire reinforced
- preferably acrylic base plate
Why would acrylic base plate be preferred to wax base plate for an acrylic denture?
- as it’s more durable, robust, harder
- Can test retention with it
- Can assess undercuts (wax is forgiving so can go into undercuts but acrylic is not)
If you are making a cobalt chromium denture you will carry out this stage using?
you will have your metal framework with wax occlusal rims attached
Why do we do this defintive jaw reg stage?
- Record the shade and the mould of tooth you wish used
EXTRA IMPORTANT - steps same as prelim jaw reg
- need to adjust upper + lower wax occlusal rims
- record patient’s occlusion
- For the definitive jaw reg we adjust the upper + lower wax rims separately to the correct occlusal plane
- If upper FES: foxes occlusal guide plane is used to check the occlusal plane to be parallel to the eye level and ala tragal line
- If lower FES: check the occlusal rim in relation to the lingual aspect of the tongue + retromolar pads
- If anterior teeth missing: need to mark centre line, canine line + smile lines of upper rim
How should you record the shade?
- match it to patients teeth + use a shade guide
TIPS
- ask the patient as well (may want to go for a lighter shade)
- you give them guidance but it’s their choice (bring nurse to help)
- shade match under diff light settings
- Use shade guide from same company you’ll use for the teeth
- often describe teeth as being square, oval or slightly tapered
- male usu more square
- female usu oval or tapered slightly
What should you do before inserting the preliminary jaw reg denture (that has come from the lab) in patients mouth?
- place in a perform bath for 10 minutes to disinfect
(All lab work should be disinfected)
- need to put date of work required
TIP
- remember to disinfect anything placed in patient mouth in perform bath before sending off)
(Not yet processing denture)
