tumour lysis syndrome Flashcards
defin tumour lysis syndrome
a group of metabolic abnormalities that can occur as a complication during treatment of cancer
what are the lab requirements of TLS?
o high potassium
o high phosphate
o low calcium
o high uric acid
what needs to be present for a clinical diagnosis of TLS?
o Increased serum creatinine
o Cardiac arrhythmia or sudden death
o Seizure
main risk factor for TLS?
chemotherapy for lymphoma or leukemia
what is the pathophysiology?
when too many tumour cells are killed to quickly they release toxins into the body and there is metabolic disregulation
main presenting symptoms of TLS?
- signs of Hyperkalaemia
- signs of Hyperphosphataemia
- signs of Hypocalcaemia
- signs of Hyperuricaemia
- signs of Lactic Acidosis
main investigation for TLS?
• Check the levels of all the metabolites that are deranged: o Potassium o Phosphate o Calcium o Uric acid
• Monitor for symptoms:
o Increased serum creatinine
o Arrhythmia
o Seizure
