Tumor and metabolic diseases Flashcards
`MSK tumors
Tumors come from the mesodermal tissue (connective tissues like bone, fat, muscles
cancers are called sarcomes and are very rare
they like to metastasize to the lung
benign bone
non ossifying fibroma, enchondroma, unicameral bone cyst, fibroust dysplasia, eosinophilic granuloma, aneurismal bone cyst, giant cell tumor of bone
malignant bone
metatstatic disease, osteosarcoma, ewing’s sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, multiple myeloma
benign soft tissue
ganglion, lipomas, arterio venous malformation, giant cell tumor of tendon sheath
malignant soft tissue
malignant fibrou histiocytoma, liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma
MSK history indicatiors
age
mass formation (may not be rapid)
pain (night achy pain in bone tumors, painless in soft tissue)
history of prostate, lung, breast, thryoid or renal.
Physical exam: Tenderness, mass, joint swelling, limp
MSK tumors tests
X rays of the limb: bony destruction
boine scan: bony activity, skip lesions
MRI: assess soft tissue anatomy
CT chest/ abdomen/ pelvis: look for primary or mets to lung
Other lab work to check for other caues. Anemia, infection, meyloma, thyroid, renal, rpostate, breast, lung
MSK tumors rule of thumb
over age of 40 bone tumors are most likely metatstatic
growing soft tissue masses are most likely malignant
MSK tX
excision
resection, chemo radaiation
radiation
